After a series of setbacks and injuries, Sarah McDonald has made a triumphant return to the track this season. With her sights set on the Paris Olympics, she spoke to James Rhodes about her journey, future goals, and her new partnership with On.
For three years and a half, Sarah had only one race at the 2021 British Championships due to various injuries. It was a long shot for qualifying for the Tokyo Olympics, but now her path to the Paris Olympics next year is looking more promising.
Navigating the Unknown
Returning to racing after such a long hiatus is always a challenge, regardless of the level. Sarah was both excited and nervous as she began this season with uncertainty about what to expect. However, her performance has been impressive, with significant improvements in both her times and confidence.
Sarah’s coach and physio extraordinaire, Andy Walling, has been by her side throughout her career, providing support and guidance through various injuries. Their partnership has been instrumental in her journey.
Nearly the End
Overcoming injuries and setbacks was not always easy for Sarah. After a new injury in December, she decided to take a break from running and try skiing as a form of rehabilitation. Surprisingly, skiing proved to be the perfect remedy for her nagging hip injury, and it rejuvenated her motivation to give running another shot.
Gaining Confidence
Sarah’s track season started with solid performances at two British Milers Club meetings. With each race, her times improved, and her confidence grew. Even in races that didn’t go as planned due to external factors like bad weather or tripping, Sarah remained optimistic and focused on her goals.
Madrid Magic
Sarah’s best race so far this season was at the Meeting Madrid, where she finished third with a time of 4:02.53, her third fastest ever. Although she narrowly missed the Olympic qualifying standard, this race gave her confidence that it’s only a matter of time before she achieves it.
Aiming for the Dream
Sarah’s ultimate goal is to make the team for the Paris Olympics. She knows she needs to run sub-four in order to achieve that, and she believes she is capable of it. Her focus now is on staying injury-free, performing well in the indoor season, and giving it her all in the summer of next year.
In addition to her athletic goals, Sarah recently signed a partnership with On, a brand she is excited to be a part of. As a loyalist to New Balance, she had been without a sponsor since January and is thrilled to start this new chapter in her career.
With a successful and transformative season behind her, Sarah is ready to embrace the changes and challenges that lie ahead.
